We Ride Upon Sticks
a new musical workshop by Maeli Goren-Wilson and Allison Spann
based on the novel by Quan Barry
A musical adaptation of Quan Barry’s wickedly hilarious novel, We Ride Upon Sticks is the fictional story of the 1989 Danvers High School Varsity field hockey team, their glorious ascent to the state championship, and their debaucherous descent into devilry. Coming of age within miles of the site of the 1962 Salem Witch Trials, the ten members of the soon-to-be-coven known as the Danvers Falcons discover that unleashing their witchy wildness on the world by “doing bad things” seems to translate into winning games. The formerly bad news bears become the favorites of the field. The more they explore their darkest impulses, the more connected they become to each other and the more they discover about themselves. A landscape filled with mystery and ancient enchantment clashes against the vibrant, plastic, synthy gaudiness of the 1980s in this bold new musical for young performers.
